Spring meeting 2022: Cornwall

HomeEventsSpring meeting 2022: Cornwall

26 March 2022 - 2 April 2022

Following the postponement of the 2022 Spring meeting in Hungary, Philippa Thompson stepped into the breach and organised a meeting in Cornwall, at very short notice!

Meeting details

The meeting will be based in the south of the County with excursions throughout VC1 and into the southern part of VC2, the southern part of Bodmin Moor.

Details of excursions have yet to be decided but given that it is so soon it was thought important to give out some dates. It has not been possible to find suitable accommodation for the whole group, but a property has been booked about 5 miles north-east of Truro, that has room for 10-12 individuals and enough space to be able to set up microscopes. We shall use this as a base for anyone who wishes to do microscope work in the evenings.

Spaces in this property will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The cost will work out at roughly £140 per person. There are four shared rooms with single beds and two rooms with double beds. Follow this link to find out more: Trethurffe Manor | Trethurffe Manor in Truro (6mls E)

Anyone else wishing to put their name down for the meeting will have to make their own accommodation arrangements. I can coordinate if people are looking for others to share with. The meeting has been planned for the week before school holidays start, so accommodation should still be available at a reasonable price but it would be advisable to book earlier than later. The plan is to find a suitable space, with available parking, probably close to Truro where everyone can assemble each morning and plan the day’s activities from there.

Most of Cornwall has already been well recorded. It looks as if there is a bit to do on Bodmin Moor and in the area around Polperro but many of the excursions will involve visits to look at areas that have been well recorded before. There is a lot of varied geology and different habitats so there must still be a possibility of new records being out there. It should be a good time of year for coastal acrocarps so hopefully there will be plenty to keep members busy.

Update 21/3/2022

A detailed programme for the week will shortly be emailed to everyone who has registered.

You can also download (below) a PDF file with overview maps, and a detailed map of each location in the programme. This file is compressed (17MB!) but an uncompressed version (>28MB) – and individual map PDFs – are available via a Dropbox link if preferred.

Also below you will find a download of all waypoints and tracks for the locations in the programme. Those of you who use a mapping app such as OS Maps may find it useful to import this. The file is in .csv format, but a .gpx format file is also available via Dropbox if required.
