Identification notes

The meaning of confervoid is fine and wispy and this species certainly lives up to that. S. confervoides is so slender and inconspicuous that careful searching of favoured haunts in limestone districts is usually needed to find it. It seems particularly fond of stones embedded on slopes in Carboniferous or Jurassic limestone woodland or scrub. Checking of microscopic characters is a must to eliminate potential confusers.
