Campylium stellatum

HomeLearningSpecies FinderCampylium stellatum

Identification notes

This is a characteristic species of base rich flushes and mires, but can be found in other wet base rich habitats such as dune slacks. It is usually fairly straightforward to recognise, having robust erect shoots and leaves 2-4 mm long which spread from the stem giving a stellate appearance when viewed from above. The narrow leaf apex is rolled and channelled, making it look even more spiky. The plant is a golden green above and brownish below.  The leaves appear nerveless with a hand lens although microscopy may reveal a short, weak, nerve.

Campylium protensum is similar but has smaller leaves, less than 2mm long. The stems are not so erect and it tends to grow in drier places such as chalk grassland.
