Drepanocladus lycopodioides

HomeLearningSpecies FinderDrepanocladus lycopodioides

Identification notes

This is a large, glossy and rather lovely-looking moss of dune slacks, fens and other strongly calcareous shallow wet habitats. It was formerly known as Pseudocalliergon lycopodioides but has recently been united with Drepanocladus. In limestone areas of Ireland, D. lycopodioides is locally abundant in specialised fluctuating and often seasonal lakes known as turloughs. Water in the turloughs is hyper-saturated with calcium carbonate and as a result the intermittently submerged beds of D. lycopodioides are often encrusted with lime, which may make them difficult to identify, especially when they break loose and float around in the water.
