Hypnum jutlandicum

Identification notes

Once the characteristic habitat and appearance of this moss is known, it is easily recognised, for it rarely deviates from either. It can be abundant on well-drained heath and moorland, especially where dwarf ericaceous shrubs are relatively mature and provide shelter below. In such situations, few other bryophytes may be present.

H. jutlandicum is generally recognised by its colour: a subtle but distinctive pale glossy whitish green, its regularly pinnate branching and the strongly hooked leaves. Like many other Hypnum species, it has been given various names in the past, including H. cupressiforme var. ericetorum. Currently, it is considered to be distinct enough to merit species status.
