Pedinophyllum interruptum

Identification notes

This is a rare liverwort, although it can be locally frequent in suitable habitat within its main strongholds of Carboniferous Limestone in the Yorkshire Dales and in Co. Clare.

It’s similar in size and appearance to Plagiochila porelloides, which may also share its habitats (they are also both in the same family, the Plagiochilaceae). Fortunately, poking around in a patch of P. interruptum often results in the discovery of one or more inflorescences, as this species is autoicous and often very fertile. The males are particularly striking in the way that they make the shoots appear constricted (see images), but strangely capsules are very rarely produced.
