Tortella densa

Identification notes

One of our rarest Tortella species. In the past, this species was not distinguished from T. tortuosa and in many ways it still resembles some forms of that species. However, compact tufts or cushions of a robust Tortella with erect upper, non-undulate leaves are more likely to be either T. densa or T. inclinata, another rare moss. Both species are easily distinguished from T. tortuosa in having erect upper leaves that are not strongly undulate and, when dry, they are merely curled (T. tortuosa has strongly curled and crisped dry leaves).
