Identification notes

As its common name suggests, Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus is a common moss in lawns (where permitted) and other unimproved or semi-improved grasslands where it can form extensive swards. It tends to be quite a pale green although as with all mosses, this does vary under different conditions.

From above, shoots have a starry appearance thanks to the leaves which are bent back at almost 90 degrees from the stem. Like all our Rhytidiadelphus species, the stem is red, although this can be difficult to see without looking closely as the bases of the leaves sheath the stem.
