Scorpidium revolvens

HomeLearningSpecies FinderScorpidium revolvens

Identification notes

You can expect to find this moss in terrestrial wetland habitats where there is constant, calcareous water, especially in fens and basic flushes. In strongly calcareous waters, it may be replaced by S. cossonii and the two can be tricky to tell apart at times. In such instances, its best to use microscopic characters of leaf cells rather than colour to tell them apart. S. revolvens (and S. cossonii) both have at least a partial stem hyalodermis, an important point of difference from Hamatocaulis vernicosus, which lacks one.
