Meeting details
This meeting will be focusing on montane bryophytes in the Helvellyn area. It will be quite strenuous and will involve steep slopes, screes and crags, so anyone wishing to join should have a good level of fitness and mobility. It is not appropriate for total beginner bryologists (but another weekend meeting will be arranged in Cumbria later in 2026, aimed at those who are less experienced).
We will be aiming to visit the coves on the slopes of Helvellyn (Brown Cove, Keppel Cove, Red Tarn, Ruthwaite Cove, Nethermost Cove) and the coves at the top of Deepdale under Fairfield. Brown Cove has some well documented species of interest, and some finds have been recorded at the other sites over the last 20 years or so. It would be good to confirm these and do a thorough documentation of the sites. The Deepdale Coves seem to have been largely unrecorded.
Please contact Clare Shaw at clareshaw345@gmail.com to register an interest in this meeting. Numbers will be limited. Participants will need to arrange their own accommodation – there is a good campsite at Gillside Farm, Glenridding.
